The Count System

Yarn comes in different sizes, and each type of yarn—wool, cotton, linen, worsted wool, silk, rayon—has a different numbering system. For your purposes, you want to know how many yards to 1 pound there will be in the yarn we are using for a project.

The count number is usually the higher number, so in the 2/8 worsted wool yarn called for in Project 1, the count number is 8. The ply number, the 2 here, is usually small, because we are usually using either a single-ply yarn, listed as a 1, or a two-ply yarn, marked as a 2. So a yarn labeled 2/8 means that there are 2 plies of number 8 worsted in that yarn.

Number 8 worsted is 8 times as fine as number 1 worsted. In other words, the higher the second number, the finer the yarn. 2/24 yarn is finer than 2/8 yarn, for example.

The count number for worsted is 560 yards to the pound, so 8 times 560 equals 4,480 yards to the pound, but you have to divide by 2 because you have a two-ply yarn. So really you have 2,240 yards in 1 pound of 2/8 worsted.

There is a table on page 107 that gives you the standard count numbers and also the yards per pound for common yarn counts, just to make it easier for you. Refer to this table when you are calculating how much yarn you will need for a project.

Tip: Never skimp on the cost of good yarn. Bad yarn makes bad cloth and is more trouble than it’s worth. Buy yarn directly from good suppliers. You will be more successful and not get frustrated by yarns that break.
